Nepali households traditionally eat dal bhat (दाल भात, lentils and rice) twice a day, with khaja (खाजा, snacks) such as beaten rice or roasted soybeans in between.1 Eggs and toast belong to the cafés: Thamel's older ones still serve all-day breakfasts from menus that jump from momo to muesli.2
Thamel has the most brunch cafés, ahead of Jhamsikhel & Sanepa and Lazimpat. Jhamsikhel, once mostly a quiet residential corner of Lalitpur close to Patan Durbar Square, is now known for brunch and drinks.3 Its cafés and eateries gather near Labim Mall, with Western food, Asian dishes and desserts on the menus.3
Local tip: Pair a morning kora at Boudhanath with brunch at Utpala Cafe, which opens at 07:00 and holds a farmers' market on Saturdays.67

The earliest brunch tables are in Thamel's bakeries. Pumpernickel Bakery (पम्परनिकेल बेकरी) on Paryatan Marg and Himalayan Arabica Beans both open at 06:30, and French Bakery at 07:00. A 2018 review of Pumpernickel singled out an American breakfast set of brown bread, bacon, sausage, hash browns and boiled eggs, and named a yak-cheese sandwich as the house special.4
Himalayan Arabica Beans, at the top of Seven Corner Street, serves breakfasts and lunches, and French Bakery on Paknajol Marg is stronger on pastries and vegan or gluten-free plates than on coffee, according to a coffee guide updated in January 2026.5 Coffee House (कफी हाउस) on Tridevi Sadak rounds out Thamel with brunch and a bakery counter.
South of the river, Sun Cafe & Bar (सन क्याफे एण्ड बार) in Jhamsikhel serves brunch with vegan dishes from 08:00 to 21:00 daily, and Rock Beans Coffee on Siddhi Binayak Marg in Sanepa adds Wi-Fi. Farther south, Chiyaa and Coffee (चिया र कफी) on Nakhu Road pairs brunch with a bakery counter.
In Lazimpat, Organic Smoothie Bowl & Cafe, also vegan-friendly, opens 08:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday and on Sunday, but only 10:00 to 16:00 on Saturday. East of the center, Cloud Cafe in Baneshwor serves brunch and baked goods from 08:00 to 21:00.
In the mornings at Boudhanath, devotees in scarlet robes chant prayers and walk as many as 108 kora (circuits) around the stupa.7 Utpala Cafe in Boudha is owned and run by the Kanying monastery, so the menu is vegetarian and there is no alcohol.6
Utpala has spacious outdoor seating, opens 07:00 to 21:00 and hosts a farmers' market on Saturdays, according to a café guide updated in June 2026. It also has tables with outlets for meetings or remote work, if brunch runs into the afternoon.6
Read the menu before you order. Nepal's Supreme Court declared restaurant service charges illegal in January 2023, after a district court ruling had already barred adding the 13 percent VAT on top of menu prices.8 Even so, the January 2026 guide still found some cafés adding a 10 percent service charge and 13 percent VAT.5
Tipping is voluntary.8 As of 2026, an espresso costs about Rs 150 to 300 and most café drinks Rs 200 to 500.5
