Nepalis only began trying coffee in the 1990s, and the cafés that followed now fill up with office workers on breaks and students looking for somewhere to study.1 A 2025 feature on Kathmandu's book cafés adds remote workers and study groups at Ujamaa Koffie, Bodhi Books and Bakes and Books Mandala Cafe, and notes that some students find them hard to afford.2
Jhamsikhel & Sanepa and Thamel have the most Wi-Fi cafés, followed by Patan and Baneshwor. In Thamel they sit on Paryatan Marg, J.P. Road, Jyatha Marga and the lanes around Kwabahal; across the Bagmati they spread from Pulchowk Road through Jhamsikhel to Dhobighat.
Local tip: For a full day on a laptop, start with a café that advertises plug points, such as Pumpernickel on Paryatan Marg or Top of the World Coffee in Jhamsikhel.56

From load-shedding to plug points
For years the weak link was the power grid, not the router. Scheduled cuts known as load-shedding ran up to 18 hours a day in the dry winter months.3 Kathmandu was declared free of them soon after the Tihar festival in 2016, and the Nepal Electricity Authority declared the whole country load-shedding-free in April 2018.4
Sockets are now the thing to look for. Pumpernickel Bakery (पम्परनिकेल बेकरी) on Paryatan Marg advertises four floors with fast Wi-Fi and plug points and pitches itself for work and meetings as well as breakfast.5 Top of the World Coffee, opened by an American in 2007 as one of the first coffee shops in Jhamsikhel, had special tables with plugs for laptops in 2024.6
Thamel: early tables near the guesthouses
Thamel suits an early start. Pumpernickel and Himalayan Arabica Beans both open at 06:30, the second staying open until 21:30, and Chiya Pub on Dobichaur pairs Wi-Fi with outdoor tables from 07:00 to 19:00. Kettle Café (केटल क्याफे) in Kwabahal serves vegan dishes from 09:00 to 21:00.
The Café with No Name sits in an alley off one of Thamel's busiest streets, which keeps the traffic noise out; a remote-work guide updated in 2021 measured the fastest Wi-Fi it found in Thamel there but counted few outlets.7 The same guide rated the connection at Palpasa Coffee, an underground café on J.P. Road open 07:00 to 20:00, as decent.7
Jhamsikhel, Sanepa and Patan
Kairos Cafe (काइरोस क्याफे), behind St. Mary's School in Jawalakhel, lists free Wi-Fi on its own site and describes its room as a place for studying and working.8 Café Soma on Pulchowk Jhamsikhel Marga had plenty of outlets but Wi-Fi that slowed in the afternoon when the 2021 guide tested it.7 Cafe Hessed is smoke-free and opens 08:00 to 20:00, but stays shut on Saturdays.
La Pana (ला पाना), an Argentine cafeteria in Dhobighat, runs 07:00 to 18:30. In Patan, Ujama Koffie & Bakery with Library on Shankhamul Marg opens at 06:30 with vegan dishes, and Paayo Aroma House near Shankhamul keeps 08:00 to 20:00. Near Swayambhu, Lamee Coffee (लामी कफी) on Swoyambhu Marg opens at 06:00.
Book cafés and a longer stay in the north
In Baluwatar, BM Cafe is the café of the Books Mandala bookstore,2 and the second Café Soma, on the same side of town, is smoke-free and opens 07:30 to 20:00. For an evening session, Bodhi Books & Bakes on Tangal Marg and Coffee Pasal on Durbar Marg both close at 22:00.
A session costs the price of a drink or two. As of October 2026 a regular cappuccino in Kathmandu averages about Rs 234, with prices running from Rs 160 to Rs 550.9 At Top of the World Coffee, a meal for two came to about Rs 1,500 in 2024.6

Top of the World Coffee in Jhamsikhel had tables with plugs for laptops in 2024, Café Soma in Jhamsikhel has plenty of outlets, and Kairos Cafe in Jawalakhel offers free Wi-Fi and welcomes people who study or work.
