An Auckland bakery café can mean a pie shop with an espresso machine, a French-style patisserie or a cake counter that stays open into the evening. Before 1950, most New Zealanders took refreshment in tearooms, milk bars or pubs, and "coffee" usually meant coffee essence, a liquid of coffee and chicory served in hot milk.1 Change came with American servicemen in the Second World War and with European immigrants and refugees, who brought their own café habits.1
Bakery cafés are spread more evenly than other kinds: the CBD has the most, just ahead of Eden Terrace. Nearly all of them open on Saturday, and most on Sunday too.
Local tip: For a 05:30 start, Duchess Bakery on Symonds Street and Authentic Bakery & Cafe on Crowhurst Street open earliest on weekdays; both are shut on Sundays.
Where these cafés are: City Centre (4), Eden Terrace & Newton (3), Newmarket & Grafton (2), Wynyard Quarter & Viaduct (2), Mount Eden (2), Ponsonby & Freemans Bay (2), Sandringham, Balmoral & Mt Albert (2), Grey Lynn & Westmere (1), Herne Bay & St Marys Bay (1), Kingsland & Morningside (1), Karangahape Road (1).

Patrick Lam, a former Cambodian refugee, bought a lunch bar in Avondale, ran it for two years and made his first pie there, mince and cheese; he went on to win the supreme award in 2003.3
