Most Auckland cafés finish their day by mid-afternoon: about two in three close by 16:00. A 2019 Concrete Playground roundup of late-afternoon cafés began by noting that the usual spots seemed to shut at 15:00.1 The cafés that stay open late are mostly dessert bars and all-day places, and the CBD has the most of them, ahead of Newmarket.

Habibi Cafe at 50 High Street never closes: it is open 24 hours. Elsewhere, Circus Circus at 447 Mount Eden Road is open 06:30–22:00 every day, Sundays included.

Local tip: Early in the week the choice narrows: Cakes n Ladders shuts on Mondays and Tuesdays, but Circus Circus on Mount Eden Road serves until 22:00 every day.

Where these cafés are: City Centre (4), Newmarket & Grafton (3), Eden Terrace & Newton (2), Mount Eden (2), Kingsland & Morningside (1), Herne Bay & St Marys Bay (1), Epsom & Remuera (1).

Why most cafés stop at 15:00

Owners point to staffing. In a 2020 Critic Te Ārohi piece from Dunedin, one owner said the café ran a single 7.5-hour shift of permanent full-time staff and that longer hours would hurt service and quality.2 Another said few new customers came in after 15:30, and by 16:00 people wanted an early dinner.2

Auckland's CBD shows the same curve. A 2025 JLL study of 22 city cafés found demand peaks between 10:00 and 12:00 and declines gradually from 15:00 to 17:00.3

When coffee bars stayed up

Late coffee is older than the 15:00 close. The coffee bars that spread through New Zealand in the 1950s served shoppers and workers by day and stayed open through the night and into the early hours.4 Few had Italian espresso machines, and after import restrictions in 1958, filter and Cona drip coffee stayed common.4

In the CBD today, The Wafflers at 12 O'Connell Street opens until 20:45 most nights and 22:45 from Thursday to Saturday. Romani Cafe stays until 22:00 on Thursdays and Fridays, and East at 63–67 Nelson Street serves two sessions, 12:00–15:00 and 17:00–22:00.

Mount Eden Road and Dominion Road

Mount Eden Road has two of the longest days: café Mont at number 66 opens 06:30–22:30 on weekdays, and Circus Circus at number 447 opens 06:30–22:00. In Mount Eden, Jelly House – Desserts & Tea Time serves from 12:00 until 23:00, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Dominion Road runs 7.3 km from Mount Eden towards the Manukau Harbour, and many Asian restaurants line it between Valley Road and Kensington Avenue.5 Fukurou Patisserie, also in Mount Eden, bakes until 21:00 from Friday to Sunday.

Newmarket and the city fringe

Seasons Dessert & Coffee at 442B Khyber Pass Road opens 11:00–22:00, and until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Sugar Bae at 1 Sarawia Street serves until 21:00, or 22:00 at the end of the week, and Gilli Cafe on Carlton Gore Road runs a second evening session that ends at 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Cakes n Ladders at 173 Symonds Street opens at 13:00 from Wednesday to Friday and at 10:00 at weekends, and stays until 22:00; it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Chocolate Boutique at 323 Parnell Road, open since 1996, is on Auckland's official tourism list of after-dark dessert spots.6
