Uteservering, outdoor seating, is the surest sign of spring in Oslo. VisitOSLO puts it simply: in a city with a long, cold winter, people are rarely happier than when warmer winds and more sun let them eat and drink in the open air.1 The light helps, too: around midsummer there are more than 18 hours of daylight, and it never gets fully dark at night.2
The average last spring frost at Blindern falls on 23 April and the first autumn frost on 17 October, a frost-free season of 176 days.2 Many terraces follow roughly that calendar; Farine in Kampen, for one, opens its terrace from April to October.3
Local tip: Choose your terrace by the hour: in the center outdoor tables may stay out until midnight, but in residential neighborhoods outside it they must close by 22:00.

How late terraces can stay open
Oslo sets separate hours for indoor and outdoor seating at licensed places. In the center, terraces may open from 06:00 to 24:00, and in the inner center until 03:30; a backyard terrace overlooked by at least one home must close at 24:00 in the center and at 20:00 outside it.4 In residential areas outside the center, outdoor seating closes at 22:00.4
Where homes are close by, music from outdoor speakers, or through open doors and windows, is banned after 23:00.5 In autumn 2026, cafés on several St. Hanshaugen streets may also set tables up to one meter out from their walls without a permit, a trial the city plans to extend from 2027.5
Park, garden and island cafés
Kafe Vigeland sits right inside the main entrance to Frogner Park, with a terrace beside the park; in June, July and August it opens 09:00–18:00, and from October to March 10:00–16:00.6 Handwerk Botaniske, in the Botanical Garden at Tøyen, stays open all year and sets out a large terrace in spring, summer and autumn, and its pastries can be taken out to the garden’s picnic spots.7
Hovedøya is eight minutes by ferry from Aker Brygge on route B1, which runs all year, with departures roughly every 30 minutes between May and early September.8 The islands are in fare zone 1, and a single ticket cost 42 kr in 2023; the summer-only B2 continues to Langøyene, the island where camping is allowed.8 Hovedøya’s café, Klosterkroa, opens Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00–18:00. Hønse-Lovisas hus on Sandakerveien serves outdoors daily 11:00–18:00.
Where the terraces are
Sentrum has the most outdoor tables, from Tekehtopa on St. Olavs plass and Pascal on Torggata to Tullin’s on Tullins gate and Northland on Stortorvet. Frogner and Majorstuen follow, with seating outside at Braud on Middelthuns gate, Eckers Cafe on Eckersbergs gate and Kaffebønnen in Skøyen.
In Grünerløkka, Supreme Roastworks and Sunt og Godt share Thorvald Meyers gate 18, and Cocoa looks onto Birkelunden. Grønland and Tøyen add KUMI on Schweigaards gate, Papegøye on Urtegata and Em oi! on Brugata, while in Kampen, Kampen Kaffe & Bar has tables on Bøgata and Kiosk sets some out on St. Halvards gate at Galgeberg.
