The surest free connection in Oslo is the public library. Deichman’s libraries offer free use of Wi-Fi and other tools, charging only for materials such as printing paper.1 The main branch, Deichman Bjørvika, also lends study spaces at no cost and has its own café, Kaffoteket, on the ground floor.2
Registered users can use the libraries every day from 07:00 to 22:00, even when no staff are on duty.3 Several branches offer these extended hours, and the door opens with the Oslonøkkelen app.1
The library itself goes back to 12 January 1785, when it opened on an endowment from Carl Deichman, and today has more than 20 branches across the city. Its main building opened in Bjørvika, next to the Opera and the new Munch Museum, on 18 June 2020.3
Local tip: If the cafés are full, Deichman Bjørvika’s free Wi-Fi and study spaces are open until 22:00 on weekdays, with Kaffoteket on the ground floor.

Kaffoteket and Deichman Bjørvika
Kaffoteket sells coffee and lunch at Operagata 2, on the ground floor of the main library, and is open 08:00–22:00 on weekdays, the same weekday hours as the library.2 At weekends it closes at 18:00. For dinner, Centropa restaurant shares the ground floor and has outdoor seating at street level and its own roof terrace on the second floor.2 Most things in the building are free, from study spaces to books and tools; only paper and materials are charged, at cost.2

Sitting in versus taking away
Food and drink consumed on the premises carry 25% VAT, against 15% for takeaway, and some chains show two prices as a result: in July 2025, Baker Hansen charged 45 kr for a takeaway caffè latte and 52 kr for one at a table.5 Some newer chains are designed for short stops. Hakone Coffee, on Karl Johans gate and Storgata, built its concept around the perfect coffee to go and gives every fifth coffee free.4
