The coolest hours in Saigon come before work. Mean daily lows at Tân Sơn Nhất airport run from 23.1 °C in February to 26.4 °C in April and May, and by Vietnam Tourism's account the mornings are already hot and sunny.12 Before sunrise the street sweepers are out, and people sit over coffee and the news before heading to work.6

Bình Thạnh has the most cafés open by 06:00, ahead of Gò Vấp, then Phú Nhuận, District 1 and District 7. More than a third of the early openers never close, and nearly all of the others open at 06:00 exactly.

Local tip: To see a cà phê vợt stall at work, go to Ba Lù on Châu Văn Liêm between 06:30 and 08:00, the busiest stretch at such stalls; some of them are shut by noon.

The morning rush at the cà phê vợt stalls

Saigon's cloth-filter coffee has its busiest hour early. At the cà phê vợt stalls, a barista spoons ground coffee into a white cloth net on a steel handle, pours in hot water and lets it sit in a steel jug for a few seconds before serving.3 The rush runs from about 06:30 to 08:00, and some stalls close at noon.4

A cup cost 15,000–20,000₫ as of 2022, close to the price of sidewalk coffee.34 The regulars used to be mostly older men reading newspapers and talking; viral videos have since brought in a younger crowd, and on weekends the alleys fill while older locals play chess.3 Ba Lù, at 94 Châu Văn Liêm in Chợ Lớn, sits in the heart of the city's Chinese community, serves its coffee strong and has neither Wi-Fi nor air-conditioning.3

Coffee on the ground at dawn

Cà phê bệt, coffee drunk sitting on the pavement, a mat or a newspaper, took hold among Saigon's young people in the 1990s. Vietcetera's 2025 guide calls 05:00 to 06:00 its golden hour.5 Its regular spots are the grounds of Notre-Dame Cathedral, 30/4 Park, Turtle Lake, the Opera House and Alexandre de Rhodes Street.5

Prices depend on the view. As of 2025, a cup cost 10,000–15,000₫ on Alexandre de Rhodes and 30,000–50,000₫ by the cathedral; the usual order is cà phê sữa đá (iced coffee with condensed milk), black coffee on ice or bạc xỉu, a milkier version.5 Most of these vendors work without a permit, and urban management officers sometimes move drinkers on.5

Where the early cafés are

Bình Thạnh's earliest opener is Mộc Coffee, which starts at 04:00 and closes at 16:00. Cà Phê Bike Việt Nam at 400/4A Ung Văn Khiêm and Morning Coffee on Thanh Đa open at 06:00, and Cà Phê 2NT on Phạm Văn Đồng, Cà Phê Muahanoi on Nguyễn Xí and Vuông - Coffee & Booze on Ngô Tất Tố never close.

In District 1, Cà Phê Betta Fish at 152 Võ Văn Kiệt opens at 06:00, and Cà Phê Snob at 147A Trần Hưng Đạo and LOWKEY COFFEE LC at 159 Nguyễn Du run around the clock. Gò Vấp's early cafés include Cà Phê Góc Phố on Đường số 9, CHỊ TÔI COFFEE off Nguyễn Văn Nghi and Epatta Coffee at 293 Quang Trung, which is open 24 hours and takes cards.
