Brunch, sometimes called mokost in Danish (from morgenmad, breakfast, and frokost, lunch), is a large meal eaten mostly at weekends, at home or in a café.1 A Danish brunch plate assembles small portions: bread, cheese, jam, pancakes, yogurt and juice alongside eggs, bacon and sausages, often with fruit.1

Going out for it is a fixture of the Copenhagen weekend. A 2013 report described Copenhageners filling cafés and restaurants from about 10:00 and counted brunch, with beer and cycling, as part of Danish culture.2 In 2013 Café Castro charged 129 kr. for its weekend buffet and Restaurant Sult 200 kr., while brunch platters at Couloir and Carlton cost 115–119 kr. without drinks.2

Local tip: For brunch without a booking, go on a weekday before 12:30, when Mad & Kaffe on Sønder Boulevard stops serving its tick-box menu.3

Where these cafés are: Nørrebro (3), Frederiksberg (3), Amager (2), Valby (2), Vesterbro (1), Indre By (1).

Tick-box brunch and what it costs

Many cafés let you build your own plate from a list. Mad & Kaffe, which began on Sønder Boulevard in 2015, prices brunch by the number of dishes: three, five or seven for 120, 160 or 190 kr. on its October 2026 menu.34 It serves brunch until 12:30 on weekdays and 13:00 at weekends.3

Wulff & Konstali, on Sankt Hans Torv, works the same way, with more than 20 sweet and savory dishes from which you tick five or seven.5 Mad & Kaffe's branches on Tyrolsgade in Amager and Godthåbsvej in Frederiksberg stay open until 21:00 Monday to Saturday, long after the brunch menu ends.3

Where the brunch cafés are

Nørrebro and Frederiksberg have the most brunch cafés, with Amager and Valby next. On Jægersborggade, The Sixteen Twelve at No. 8 was opened in 2021 by three expats and serves dishes such as shakshuka and loaded croissants.5 It opens at 08:00 at weekends, an hour earlier than on weekdays. Kaf, also in Nørrebro, is open daily 09:00–17:30, and Sidecar opens at 08:00 on weekdays.

In Frederiksberg, Olivers Oase on Frederiksberg Allé is open every day from 08:00 to 18:00, and Malthe P Café on Falkoner Alle from 07:00 on weekdays and 09:00 at weekends.

In Valby, Thiemers Kaffebar at Valby Langgade 30 opens at 08:00 on weekdays, and Wildflower on Gammel Køge Landevej is open daily 09:00–17:00. In the center, Ø12 at Silkegade 1 opens at 07:30 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends; on Amager, Cava Cafe at Kongedybet 28 is open daily 09:00–22:00.

Booking and timing

Weekend tables go first. At Kompa'9, a small café on Kompagnistræde near Strøget with smørrebrød on a chalkboard menu, weekend brunch has needed a booking, while weekdays usually have space.5 It opens at 08:00 on Saturdays, 90 minutes earlier than on other days.

At Apotek 57 on Fredericiagade, known for poached eggs on crisp waffles, the advice is to arrive early.5 It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and opens at 07:30 from Wednesday to Friday. Lille Bakery on Refshaleøen, with a patio and a communal dining hall, has hosted a monthly Sunday farmers market.5
