Getting online in Copenhagen is rarely the hard part. Denmark is in the EU, so phones on an EU or EEA plan use mobile data here without extra charges under the roam-like-at-home rules.1 Every branch of the public library also runs a free network called Publikum, with no account or login: you connect and accept the terms of use.2 The main library, at Krystalgade 15 in the center, also has study places.4

A café table is a different matter, because the owner decides how it is used. When cafés began restricting laptops in 2016, the consumer organization Tænk said no rules cover it: each café sets its own policy and only has to put up clear signs about it.3

Local tip: If every café table is taken, the nearest public library has free Wi-Fi on the Publikum network, with no login needed.2

Laptop rules and the reasons for them

That year Café Paludan, the book café on Fiolstræde, said it would soon stop laptop use after 18:00, and The Laundromat Cafe was named among the cafés with a ban; most such limits did not apply during the day.3 Owners argued that laptop users take up more space and spend less, and Paludan's head of bar said the café makes its money from people who come to eat.3

Both have Wi-Fi. Paludan serves until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and the Laundromat Cafe, on Randersgade in Østerbro, until 23:00 every day, so look for a sign before unpacking in the evening.

Where to find a connection

Indre By has the most cafés with Wi-Fi, followed by Nyhavn & Frederiksstaden. Social Brew, at Ved Vesterport 7, opens at 07:30 on weekdays and closes at 20:00 Monday to Saturday; 20 grams, on Rosengården, is open daily 09:00–18:00, and Kabys is at Nansensgade 64.

In Frederiksstaden, Kafferiet at Kronprinsessegade 1 opens at 08:00 on weekdays and No. 11 is on Sankt Annæ Plads. Rentemestervej in Nordvest has two: Kaffedepartementet at No. 64, open daily 08:00–20:00, and Cafe Sirius at No. 13. In Nordhavn, Pamarés on Marmorvej opens at 07:30 on weekdays, and in Valby, Coffeenhagen on Toftegårds Allé opens at 09:00 Monday to Saturday.

Early starts and late finishes

For an early start, Nachbar on Martin Luther Kings Vej in Vesterbro opens at 07:00 every day, and Coffee Collective's bar at Jægersborggade 57 and Prolog's bar on Papirøen both open at 07:00 on weekdays. Copenhagen Coffee Lab at Strandlodsvej 48 on Amager and Risteriet at Helgolandsgade 21 in Vesterbro follow at 07:30 on weekdays. Also on Amager, Bingo on Hans Bogbinders Allé opens at 09:00 from Tuesday to Thursday.

To keep working into the evening, Cafe Blå Time on Store Kongensgade serves daily until 23:00. Tobi's Cafe, on Leifsgade in Islands Brygge, stays open until 23:00 from Tuesday to Saturday and closes on Sundays, and Fovl in Nordvest serves until 23:00 on Thursdays and Fridays. Kaffe, at Istedgade 90, has Wi-Fi until 22:00 every day, and Bastard Café's Valby branch, on Valgårdsvej, until midnight from Sunday to Thursday and 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
