Bavaria lets cafés stay open almost around the clock, but towns may lengthen the closing hours by ordinance where there is a public need or special local conditions, or for a single business.1 Munich lifts the closing hour entirely during the nights of the last four days of Fasching, the carnival season.2

In the late 1990s much of Munich's nightlife moved east. From 1996 the empty Pfanni factory halls behind the Ostbahnhof filled with up to 30 clubs, bars and studios, and by the early 2000s the Kunstpark Ost and its successors were billed as Europe's biggest party mile.3 Today the clubs cluster around Sonnenstraße and the Ostbahnhof.4

Local tip: During the last four nights of Fasching the closing hour is suspended across Munich, so a café that is normally dark by 01:00 may still be serving.2
