In Munich the beer garden plays the part that street cafés play elsewhere: when the sun is out, locals meet over a Maß and a Brotzeit (cold snack) under the chestnuts.1 The Augustiner-Keller, with more than a hundred chestnut trees, is the oldest beer garden in the city.1
Café terraces have their own rulebook. Since 2001 the city has allowed outdoor seating on public ground from 06:00 to 23:00, and in October 2002 it extended those hours to private gardens and terraces, but only where the café itself is licensed until at least 23:00.2
Local tip: Café Isarlust on the Praterinsel reserves tables only for groups on a private museum tour, so arrive early for a seat under the chestnuts on a sunny weekend.3
Where these cafés are: Maxvorstadt (49), Glockenbach & Isarvorstadt (39), Altstadt (33), Schwabing (28), Neuhausen & Nymphenburg (26), Sendling (26), Haidhausen (24), Au (16), Giesing & Ramersdorf (15), Westend (12), Berg am Laim (10), Lehel (8), Bogenhausen (4), Olympiapark (4), Laim (3).

Café Isarlust, the café of the Alpine Museum on the Praterinsel, has a garden and terrace under old chestnut trees close to the river, with home-baked cake and quiche; inside there is a reading lounge for rainy days. It is open from 10:00 to 18:00, Tuesday to Sunday.3
In the Englischer Garten, kiosks such as the Milchhäusl and Fräulein Grüneis sell coffee to take onto the lawns.4 The Chinesischer Turm, built around 1790 in the style of an Asian pagoda and rebuilt after the Second World War, is the park's landmark, with a beer garden at its foot.14
The Giesinger Grünspitz on Tegernseer Landstraße was a car dealer's lot until the city bought it in 2014. Under the Soziale Stadt program it became a neighborhood project with raised beds, art and a kiosk.5
In October 2024 the city began enlarging the square by about 380 square meters to some 1,300; the old chestnut trees stay, and a wide stairway with seating decks faces the Martin-Luther-Straße crossing.5 The Kiosk am Grünspitz sits at Tegernseer Landstraße 104.
Tambosi's terrace toward the Feldherrnhalle works on a first-come basis, while its tables in the Hofgarten can be reserved.6 On the Gärtnerplatz, the benches round the flower beds serve as cinema seats, and on Reichenbachstraße people sit on small stools outside the shops with a cup in hand.7
The Maxvorstadt has the most cafés with outside tables, ahead of the Glockenbachviertel and the Altstadt. Café Josefina on Augustenstraße opens at 07:30 on weekdays, Joon on Theresienstraße daily at 09:00, and the Gartensalon on Türkenstraße only at weekends.
In the Glockenbachviertel, Vollaths at Thalkirchner Straße 1 serves outside from 08:00, and Kustermann on Lindwurmstraße from 09:00 every day. In the old town, Café Saanu on Damenstiftstraße and French Touch Pâtisserie on Brunnstraße both have outdoor tables.
From April to September the city may allow outdoor tables until midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of public holidays, unless building law stands in the way. The longer hours do not apply to inner courtyards, and rear areas that reach behind a building are judged case by case.2
In practice most terrace cafés close well before that: Café Josefina at 19:00, Vollaths at 22:00, and Bar Rosso on Karlsplatz at 22:00 from Monday to Saturday.

Outdoor seating on public ground in Munich may be used from 06:00 to 23:00, a rule in place since 2001; private gardens and terraces have the same hours if the café is licensed until at least 23:00. From April to September, midnight is possible on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of holidays, except in inner courtyards.
Café Isarlust, the café of the Alpine Museum on the Praterinsel, has a garden and terrace under old chestnut trees near the river and serves home-baked cake and quiche from 10:00 to 18:00, Tuesday to Sunday. It reserves tables only for groups on a private museum tour.
The Kiosk am Grünspitz stands on the Giesinger Grünspitz at Tegernseer Landstraße 104, a former car dealer's lot that the city bought in 2014 and turned into a neighborhood space. The square was enlarged to about 1,300 square meters from October 2024, keeping its old chestnut trees.
Free listings are free for good. A featured page gives you photos, a menu and your own URL, in your café's own design, for less than a coffee a day.
