Munich runs free public Wi-Fi under the name M-WLAN on its main squares: Marienplatz, Stachus, Odeonsplatz, the Gärtnerplatz, Königsplatz, Münchner Freiheit, Sendlinger Tor, the Theresienwiese and Mangfallplatz, plus some tram stops, public buildings and cafés.1

The open network forces a disconnection after 120 minutes, when you accept the terms again, and limits speed per device.1 For a café session, the university quarter is the safest bet: the Maxvorstadt has more cafés with Wi-Fi than any other part of the city, ahead of Haidhausen and the Glockenbachviertel.

Local tip: If a café has no Wi-Fi, M-WLAN Free covers Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz and the Gärtnerplatz; after 120 minutes it drops you, and you simply accept the terms again.1

Where these cafés are: Maxvorstadt (11), Glockenbach & Isarvorstadt (8), Haidhausen (7), Schwabing (6), Altstadt (3), Sendling (3), Westend (3), Lehel (2), Olympiapark (1), Neuhausen & Nymphenburg (1), Giesing & Ramersdorf (1).

How M-WLAN works

There are two networks. M-WLAN Free Wi-Fi is unencrypted and asks you to confirm the terms on a start page, regularly; M-WLAN Secure Wi-Fi is encrypted and needs a one-time registration with an email address through the free network, after which up to three devices log in automatically with the same details.1

Students and staff of universities that use eduroam can also connect in the city center and at university sites.1

Cafés for working near the universities

Lost Weekend on Schellingstraße was designed with coworking in mind: students from the university buildings upstairs open laptops at its long tables, and the glass fronts let you watch the street on rainy days.2 More than 120,000 students of the two universities live and study in the Maxvorstadt.3

The Stabi Café, the cafeteria of the Bavarian State Library at Ludwigstraße 16, opens from 08:00 on weekdays and 09:00 on Saturdays. Cafe an der Uni on Ludwigstraße has Wi-Fi from 08:00 until 01:00, and Joon on Theresienstraße from 09:00 to 17:00 every day. Near the main station, A Little lost on Lämmerstraße opens at 08:00.

Start-ups and side streets

WERK1 in the Werksviertel calls itself the friendliest place in Munich for start-ups, with cheap offices, coworking desks, a founders' café and more than 100 events a year.4 Café WERK1 is on Am Kartoffelgarten.

Elsewhere in Haidhausen, Claude & Julien on Elsässer Straße opens at 07:00 from Monday to Saturday, and Helma on Preysingstraße at 10:00. In the Glockenbachviertel, Pini on Klenzestraße has Wi-Fi until 23:00 from Monday to Thursday, and the Tushita Teehaus a few doors along has it too.

In the old town, Tambosi on Odeonsplatz and the Coucou Food Market on Sankt-Jakobs-Platz have Wi-Fi; in the Westend, Simurg on Sandtnerstraße is open every day from 09:00 to 18:00. In Schwabing, Black Bean on Pündterplatz starts at 07:30 on weekdays and Cafe Clara on Isabellastraße at 09:30 every day; in Sendling, Lamingtons on Passauerstraße and Café Erika on Senserstraße have Wi-Fi as well.

When to leave the laptop at home

Not every café wants screens. At Café Ruffini in Neuhausen mobile phones are not allowed at all, a rule Munich's tourist office presents as part of the old café culture.5

Others mix the two. Mary's Coffee Club in the Maxvorstadt is one café where people working at laptops sit next to friends meeting for breakfast.6

For café owners

Your café deserves better than a pin someone else dropped

Free listings are free for good. A featured page gives you photos, a menu and your own URL, in your café's own design, for less than a coffee a day.
