Kuta grew through the 1970s as hotels, souvenir shops and restaurants opened, and Legian, to its north, became the commercial hub of the area and the site of many of its restaurants and entertainment spots.1 Seminyak continues the strip northward along Jalan Legian.1

Here, open late means serving until 22:00 or later, or around the clock. Ubud and Canggu have the most such cafés, ahead of Uluwatu and Seminyak, then Kuta-Legian. Indonesian coffee shops are no longer only places for nongkrong, hanging out with friends: people also come with a laptop to finish their work.2

Local tip: On the eve of Nyepi, head out early or stay close to your lodging: many local roads close for the ogoh-ogoh parades from the afternoon.

Where these cafés are: Canggu (12), Ubud (12), Seminyak & Kerobokan (9), Uluwatu & the Bukit (9), Kuta & Legian (8), Denpasar (4), Gianyar & Sukawati (3), Sanur (3), Nusa Dua & Tanjung Benoa (1).

The street also carries a memorial. In the 2002 bombings, a suicide bomber struck Paddy's Pub and a car bomb exploded at a bar opposite it on Legian Street; a permanent memorial on the site of Paddy's Pub was dedicated on 12 October 2004, the second anniversary.1

Nyepi and wet-season nights

Once a year Bali shuts down for a full day. Nyepi, the Day of Silence, lasts from 06:00 to 06:00 the next morning: fire and artificial light are restricted, work, travel and leisure are off limits, the island's only airport closes, and pecalang, traditional security men, patrol the streets.3 On the afternoon and evening before, many local roads close for parades of ogoh-ogoh effigies.3 In 2027, Nyepi is on Monday 8 March.4

In the wet season, plan the trip home. From December to March, the heavy rain of the west monsoon falls mostly at night.5
