Bali's heat changes little through the year. At Ngurah Rai airport on the south coast, the mean daily high moves only between 29.0°C in July and 31.6°C in November, and from June to September humidity is low and evenings can be mild.1 Those are the months for a table outside after dark.

Denpasar has by far the most cafés with outdoor seating, followed by Seminyak and Ubud, then Canggu and Uluwatu.

Local tip: From December to March, pick a covered terrace for the evening, when most of the heavy rain falls; the morning after a night storm is usually clear.

Where these cafés are: Denpasar (18), Seminyak & Kerobokan (10), Ubud (9), Canggu (8), Uluwatu & the Bukit (7), Gianyar & Sukawati (3), Kuta & Legian (3), Sanur (2).

Smoke-free rooms and open-air smoking areas

Under Bali's 2011 smoke-free regulation, restaurants count as public places where smoking is banned, but managers may set aside a smoking area, which must be open or directly connected to outside air and separate from the main building.2 Breaking the rules can mean up to three months' detention or a fine of up to Rp50,000.2

That puts the smokers outside, and there are many: in Indonesia's 2021 Global Adult Tobacco Survey, 65.5% of men aged 15 and over smoked, against 3.3% of women.3 If smoke bothers you, take a table upwind at the edge of the terrace.

Denpasar's terraces

Toko Kopi TUKU on Puputan 1 in Renon opens 07:00–21:00. It belongs to a chain that Andanu Prasetyo started on Jalan Cipete Raya in Jakarta in 2015 and that pioneered the trend for kopi susu gula aren, milk coffee sweetened with palm sugar.4

Voltvet at 11 Jalan Veteran runs 11:00–23:00, Jala Coffee at 10a Tukad Unda 12:00–22:30, and Warung Tobit, in gang IX off Jalan Pulau Bungin, 08:00–00:00. For daytime, Second Floor Coffee at 86 Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai opens 08:00–17:00 except Mondays, and Warung Bukde Pariwisata on Jalan Dokter Goris opens on weekdays only. Kopi Nako is at 32 Jalan Drupadi and Five Roastery on Serangan.

Paddy fields and garden tables in Ubud and Canggu

Bali's paddy landscape comes from subak, the cooperative irrigation system that has watered the island's rice fields since the 9th century, with water temples at its center; it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on 6 July 2012.5 In Canggu, development has replaced much of the rice fields, farmland and open space.6

In Ubud, outdoor tables come with Bodega at 18 Jalan Cempaka Putih (07:00–17:00), Petite Boulangerie on Jalan Katik Lantang and SUSI Cafe on Jalan Raya Kelusa (08:00–16:00). In Canggu, Openhouse runs 06:00–22:30, TaTa Pererenan 06:30–22:30 and Crate Cafe 06:00–18:00.

Wet-season rain and the 2025 floods

The wet season is the catch. January averages 388 mm of rain over about 19 days at the airport, against 16 mm over two days in August, and from December to March the west monsoon brings heavy rain, mostly at night, usually followed by sunny days.1

Floods can come outside the season too. In September 2025 Bali had its worst flooding in years: more than a dozen people died, Denpasar was hit hardest, and six of Bali's eight regencies were inundated. Governor I Wayan Koster then announced a planned ban on building restaurants, villas and hotels on productive farmland.7
