Catalan separates the forn de pa (bread bakery) from the pastisseria (pastry shop), and a bakery café is either one with a coffee machine and somewhere to sit. Pastry has its own trade body: the Gremi de Pastisseria de Barcelona, founded in 1901, opened a pastry school on Carrer Comtal in 1975. The school now stands on Plaça de Pons i Clerch, and most of its students come from abroad.1

Some shops are old. La Colmena, in the Gòtic, opened in 1849 as Ca l'Abella, took its present name in 1868 when the Costa family bought it and moved it across the street, and has belonged to the Roig family since 1927. Its torró de crema cremada, nougat with burnt custard, won the guild's first Spain-wide contest for it.5

Local tip: On a Sunday, go before lunch: Forn de pa Degustació on Carrer del Perill closes at 13:30 and La Boulangerie on Carrer de Còrsega at 14:00.

The best butter croissant in Spain

The guild's Best Artisan Butter Croissant in Spain contest has made the croissant a point of local pride. In 2024 it went to Brunells, a pastry shop founded in 1852 at the corner of Carrer de la Princesa and Montcada, which had closed for lack of successors, reopened in 2020 under three partners, won that year too and bakes about 4,000 croissants a week.2

In 2025 the 18th edition went to Toni Vera of Mervier Canal, the shop's fourth win after 2016, 2019 and 2022. About 60 anonymous bakers each delivered 12 croissants of 45–65 g, and a 14-member jury gave 40 of 100 points to taste and the rest to crumb, layers, color, shape and finish. Canal has shops at Carrer de Muntaner 566 and Carrer de Calvet 15.3

Coca for the night of Sant Joan

On the night of 23 June, the revetlla (eve) of Sant Joan, the pastry shops sell coca, a flat sweet bread. The best sellers are coca de llardons, puff pastry with pork cracklings, and brioche coques topped with pine nuts and filled with custard and candied cherries or mixed candied fruit. Chocolate, cream, truffle and cabell d'àngel (sweet pumpkin preserve) fillings gain ground every year.4

The guild urges buyers to choose handmade coques, made with slow fermentation and no preservatives and baked no more than about 24 hours ahead.4 Its president, Miquel Zaguirre, says the puff-pastry kind keeps outside the fridge for a couple of days.6

Where the forns are

Gràcia and the Sagrada Família blocks have the most bakery cafés, ahead of Eixample Dreta. Gràcia's include Forn Vell at Carrer de Nàpols 313, Melindro Tiramisú at Carrer de l'Escorial 18 and Nabucco Obrador Vegetarià at Carrer de la Fraternitat 31, open on weekdays from 08:15 to 21:15. Near the basilica, Dalila Cafè, an Italian bakery and café, is at Carrer de la Indústria 136 and COFFEE & PÂTISSERIE at Carrer de Sant Antoni Maria Claret 244.

Farther out, Kefir Coffee & Bakery at Carrer de Berenguer de Palou 71 in Sant Andreu opens Tuesday to Sunday, 08:00–21:00, and Mendieta, a pastisseria artesanal, is at Carrer de Mallorca 517 in El Clot. In Les Corts, La Forneria on Passeig de Manuel Girona opens at 08:00 from Monday to Saturday.

Early starts and short Sundays

Bakeries open earlier than most cafés and close earlier at weekends. Forn Mistral, at Carrer de Torres i Amat 7 in the Raval, opens at 07:30 from Monday to Saturday and closes from 14:30 to 16:30. On Saturday, La Forneria and El cafe de tots in Horta-Guinardó both shut at 14:00, and on Sunday Forn de pa Degustació in Gràcia closes at 13:30.
