Late cafés make sense in a city that eats late. Government figures quoted by 3Cat put breakfast in Catalonia between 08:00 and 11:00, lunch between 14:00 and 16:00 and dinner between 21:00 and 23:00.1 In Barcelona the esmorzar, a mid-morning bite, comes around 10:30 or 11:00, and lunch rarely starts before 14:00.4
The clock is one reason often given. On 17 March 1940 Franco moved Spain from Greenwich time to Central European Time, a wartime step made permanent in 1942, so the sun rises and sets about an hour later than it would on GMT.2 The Reforma Horària, a citizen campaign begun in 2014, wants meals, work and television's prime time moved earlier; some scientists doubt that changing the clock back would change daily routines, since working hours would move with it.12
Local tip: On a Friday, time the last coffee to the metro: it stops at 02:00, an hour before El cafè de les delícies in the Raval closes, while on Saturday the trains run all night.3

Eixample Dreta and Gràcia have the most cafés open until 22:00 or later, ahead of Sants. In the Dreta, Somewhere stays open until midnight every day, Charlie's Tea at Carrer de la Diputació 256 until 22:30, and Jamaica Coffee Shop runs from 06:30 to 22:30 on weekdays.
In Gràcia, La Ikas at Carrer de la Perla 22 serves until 23:00, and Godot on Carrer de Sant Domènec until 01:00 from Monday to Thursday. Some of the latest closes are in the old town and the Raval. Cafè de l'Òpera on La Rambla shuts at 02:30 every night. El cafè de les delícies opens at noon and stays open until 03:00 on Friday and Saturday, and La Monroe on Plaça de Salvador Seguí until 02:00 on the same nights. Uptown, Pa de Sucre at Carrer de Septimània 42 in Sant Gervasi serves until 01:00 on Friday.
Two places run through the night. Delabuela at Carrer del Comte Borrell 8 is open 24 hours, and Churrería J. Argilés on Carrer de la Marina fries churros around the clock on Saturday and Sunday. In Sants, Trady station is open daily from 06:00 to midnight, and Como from 05:00 to 23:00.
The metro runs 05:00–00:00 from Sunday to Thursday, until 02:00 on Friday and on the eve of public holidays, and all night on Saturday.3 When it is closed, 17 NitBus lines run from about 22:30 to 05:00, and all of them stop around Plaça de Catalunya.3
