Brunch came to Barcelona with cafés opened by people from abroad. Federal Café, which Tommy Tang and Crick King opened on Carrer del Parlament in 2010, brought an Australian-style café with a kitchen running all day, and Time Out Barcelona now calls it a pioneer of the city's brunch.12 Milk, in the Gòtic, opened in 2005 and serves brunch every day.2

Catalonia had a late breakfast of its own long before. The esmorzar de forquilla (fork breakfast) began as a mid-morning meal for farm and factory workers who had to last until lunch: a main dish, bread, a glass of wine and a coffee to finish.3 Typical plates are cap i pota (beef head and trotters), botifarra amb mongetes (sausage with white beans) and bacallà a la llauna (baked salt cod).3

Local tip: For an early weekday brunch, go to El Racó de Dalt in Gràcia, open from 07:00, or San Fermin La Teresina in the Esquerra, from 07:15; most brunch places open between 08:30 and 10:00.

The fork breakfast pushes back

Albert Molins, a journalist at La Vanguardia, has led the effort to revive it. After the pandemic he started a shared map of places that serve it, and in August 2024 he turned it into EsmorzApp, which within days showed more than 2,000 restaurants across Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearics, Andorra and La Franja.4

Molins says an esmorzar de forquilla should cost no more than €15, and that he has never met a tourist at one.3 3Cat framed his app as a culture war with brunch, noting that avocado toast pushes aside pa amb tomàquet, bread rubbed with tomato.4

Brunch on the Eixample grid

Eixample Esquerra has the most brunch cafés, ahead of Eixample Dreta and the Sagrada Família blocks. Beyond Lilo brunch and Índigo Café at numbers 1 and 3 of Enric Granados, there is Amo Brunch & Wine at Carrer de València 193, open daily 10:00–16:00 with outdoor tables and La Santisima at Carrer de Vilamarí 126, which runs from 07:30 to 21:00.

Ugot, which Time Out describes as a bakery and bruncherie with five versions of eggs Benedict, serves daily 09:00–16:00.2 On the right side of the grid, Argento's and Funky are both on Carrer de Bailèn, and Bristol Gastrobar is on Carrer de Roger de Flor.

Gràcia, Poblenou and the basilica blocks

Near the Sagrada Família, La Eulàlia at Carrer de València 437 pairs brunch with specialty coffee, FOOD o'clock at Carrer de Lepant 358 is a bakery as well, and Hand Made is at Carrer de los Castillejos 334. In Gràcia, El Racó de Dalt on Travessera de Dalt opens at 07:00 on weekdays, botànic is at Carrer de Torrijos 26 and Anticco Caffè at Carrer Gran de Gràcia 152.

Poblenou has ARTiSA at Carrer de Llull 82, Julia at Carrer de Ramon Turró 85 and Osom Nou on Carrer de Sant Joan de Malta. In the Raval, Bandido at Carrer de la Unió 22 opens at 08:30 on weekdays, and in Sant Antoni, Flipá on Carrer del Marquès de Campo Sagrado serves until 16:00.

What brunch costs, and when to go

Prices run wide. In February 2024 Time Out listed a monthly all-inclusive brunch at the InterContinental for €75, Sunday brunch at Solc in the Majestic Hotel for €65 per adult and an all-you-can-eat weekend brunch at Baldomero, in the Eixample, for €35. An Irish breakfast at Flaherty's in the Gòtic came in under €10.2

Many brunch kitchens close in mid-afternoon: Amo, Flipá and Ugot stop at 16:00 and Lilo brunch at 17:00, so treat brunch here as a morning plan.
