Barcelona is the main base in Spain for remote workers from abroad. The country created a residence permit for international teleworkers in its 2022 Startups Law, and more than 30% of the permits granted in 2024 went to foreigners living in the province of Barcelona, according to the Observatori Permanent de la Immigració.1

Cafés with Wi-Fi are most common on residential blocks rather than in the old town. The streets around the Sagrada Família have by far the most, followed by Gràcia and the two halves of the Eixample, while El Born and the Gòtic have few.

Local tip: If a café has no Wi-Fi or limits laptops, the city's free Barcelona WiFi network covers civic centres and libraries, and the Ajuntament's open-data map shows every hotspot.23

Where these cafés are: Sagrada Família & Fort Pienc (34), Gràcia (22), Eixample Dreta (14), Eixample Esquerra (12), Sarrià-Sant Gervasi (10), Poblenou (8), Les Corts (7), Horta-Guinardó (7), Sant Antoni (7), Barri Gòtic (6), Sants & Hostafrancs (5), El Clot & Camp de l'Arpa (4), El Born & Sant Pere (3).

Wi-Fi on Lepant, València and Mallorca

Around the basilica, the Wi-Fi cafés follow the long streets of the grid. On Carrer de Lepant, El petit de Casajuana is at number 336 and Merle Speciality Coffee at 338; on Carrer de València, Marsella is at 373, Sun coffee & bakery at 417 and Miam at 423. Quatre14, at Carrer de Mallorca 495, and Palmer, at Carrer de Còrsega 611, are a few blocks east.

In Gràcia, Nola at Carrer de Santa Teresa 1 is open every day until 19:30, and Santuari at Carrer del Torrent de l'Olla 7 stays open until 21:00 from Tuesday to Friday. Toki Barcelona is at Carrer de Sardenya 371 and Xócala at Carrer de Nàpols 345.

Long hours with a connection

For a full working day, a few cafés with Wi-Fi run from early morning into the evening. La Señorial on Avinguda d'Icària is open 07:00–22:30 every day, Liadisimo at Carrer de Guillem Tell 25 in Sant Gervasi runs 07:30–21:15 on weekdays, and FabCafe Barcelona at Carrer de Bailèn 11 opens 09:30–20:00 from Monday to Friday.

Later still, Somewhere in the Dreta stays open until midnight every day, Zumm on Plaça de Molina until 23:00 and Sandwich Club at Carrer de Bailèn 108 until 22:00. In Les Corts, El Pa Sencer at Carrer de Galileu 252 serves until 23:00 on Thursday and Friday.

Barcelona WiFi in civic centres and libraries

The Ajuntament opened its own network to the public as Barcelona WiFi, with access points in municipal buildings such as civic centres, libraries, sports centres and markets, and in parks.2 It publishes the location of every hotspot on its open-data portal, updated weekly, with records going back to 2013.3

One civic centre doubles as a café stop: Centre Cívic Can Deu in Les Corts has a café with Wi-Fi and outdoor tables, open 09:00–22:00 on weekdays and 10:00–14:00 on Sunday.

When a café says no laptops

Some Barcelona cafés limit laptops at busy hours. Lawyers consulted by Genbeta in 2024 said a Spanish café may do so under its right of admission, provided the rule is objective, not discriminatory and clearly made known to customers. A café can allow laptops when the room is quiet and restrict them at peak times.4

A few specialty bars skip Wi-Fi altogether. Right Side Coffee Bar in the Call lists it among the things it does not offer, along with syrups and decaf.5 For a connection in the same quarter, Black remedy at Carrer de la Ciutat 5 has Wi-Fi and opens every day until 19:00.

Is there free public Wi-Fi in Barcelona?

Yes. The Ajuntament runs Barcelona WiFi, a free network with access points in municipal buildings such as civic centres, libraries, sports centres and markets, and in parks. The city publishes every hotspot's location on its open-data portal, updated weekly. Centre Cívic Can Deu in Les Corts also has a café with Wi-Fi.

Can cafés in Barcelona ban laptops?

Yes, within limits. Lawyers consulted by Genbeta in 2024 said a café in Spain may restrict laptops under its right of admission if the rule is objective, non-discriminatory and clearly communicated, for example only at peak hours. Some Barcelona specialty bars go further: Right Side Coffee Bar in the Call offers no Wi-Fi at all.
