Brunch cafés in Hanoi
Late breakfasts in the Old Quarter and by West Lake, for after the phở stalls close.
Brunch is a recent arrival in Hanoi. A March 2026 review in Việt Nam News described it as something that had gone from a rarity to a familiar part of the city's café scene, and argued that Hanoians, long used to lingering over coffee and conversation on the sidewalk, kept the spirit of the meal before they had the word for it.1
The local breakfast runs on an earlier clock. Phở is first of all a morning dish, most people eat between 06:00 and 08:00, and by 09:00 many stalls have shut or switched to lunch.2 Brunch covers the hours after that. Most brunch cafés are in Hoàn Kiếm, around the Old Quarter, and one is by West Lake in Tây Hồ.
Local tip: Eat breakfast the Hanoi way first, with a stall bowl of phở before 08:00, then take a second breakfast at Cà Phê Blackbird on Lãn Ông, which opens at 07:00. The Red Train doesn't open until 11:00.
Where these cafés are: Hoàn Kiếm (4), Tây Hồ (West Lake) (1).

Phở, xôi and bánh cuốn: Hanoi's first meal
Hanoi-style phở uses wider noodles and a more restrained broth than versions further south, and the best bowls go before 08:00.2 Xôi is sticky rice with toppings such as shredded chicken or Chinese sausage. Bánh cuốn are thin steamed rice sheets rolled around minced pork and wood ear mushroom, a steaming technique particular to the north.2
A stall breakfast is quick. You sit on a low plastic stool, and locals are done in about ten minutes; when no price is posted, ask "bao nhiêu?" (how much?) and pay after eating.2 Tipping isn't expected.2
What breakfast and brunch cost in Hanoi
As of 2026 a standard bowl of phở costs 40,000–55,000₫, or 40,000–50,000₫ in the Old Quarter, against 35,000–40,000₫ in Đống Đa or Hai Bà Trưng.3 Xôi runs 15,000–25,000₫, a plate of bánh cuốn 25,000–40,000₫, and an iced black coffee from a stall adds 15,000–25,000₫.3
A café brunch is a different budget. One Hoàn Kiếm brunch café reviewed in March 2026 priced its menu from 55,000₫ to 280,000₫, with pasta dishes at 220,000–260,000₫, the price of four or five bowls of phở for a single plate.1
Old Quarter brunch, from Lãn Ông to Hội Vũ
Cà Phê Blackbird at 63B Phố Lãn Ông is the second branch of a café that opened on Chân Cầm in 2018; the Lãn Ông shop followed in 2019, and the company works with Vietnamese beans sourced in the country.4 It opens earliest of the Old Quarter brunch cafés, 07:00–21:30 daily.
The Hanoi Social Club, at 6 Ngõ Hội Vũ in the old Hàng Bông ward, runs 08:00–23:00 with Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, vegan dishes and card payments; Vietnam Airlines' travel guide counts it among the city's best-loved brunch places.5 At 23 Phố Đào Duy Từ, xưởng ăn vặt sells juice, tea, coffee, snacks and noodles from 09:00 to 23:30, later than most brunch places.
The Red Train Hanoi, at 10 Điện Biên Phủ, opens later, 11:00–22:00. It is at the Điện Biên Phủ end of the railway stretch from Trần Phú, where by 2018 cafés had moved into what had been a residential strip beside the track.6
West Lake and the long-stay crowd
Tây Hồ, around West Lake, is a high-end residential district with a large expatriate population and many Western restaurants, and it draws foreign residents with its schools, hospitals and infrastructure.7 The Waffle House, at 164 Phố Từ Hoa in Quảng An, opens 09:00–21:00 with Wi-Fi.
Oriberry, which has shops in Tây Hồ, belongs to a Vietnamese social enterprise founded in 2010 that works directly with coffee and tea farmers and roasts all of its own coffee; in 2017 most of its single origins came from Quảng Trị.8 Its shops also sell handmade pottery from Bát Tràng village, and Vietnam Airlines' guide points to it for plant-based and gluten-free food.85
