Hoàn Kiếm lake at dawn

The path around Hoàn Kiếm is about 1.5 km, and in the first hours of daylight it works as a public gym.² Women make up a considerably larger share of the crowd than men: dance groups of about twenty follow an instructor and older women practice tai chi, while older men jog and men in their thirties do push-ups, squats and planks or use the street gym equipment.¹ Some seniors have kept the routine for about 20 years.¹

On Saturday and Sunday mornings the roads around the lake are also free of cars and motorbikes, because the weekend walking street runs from 19:00 Friday to 24:00 Sunday.⁴

Other early fixtures: the flag and the market

At Ba Đình Square, soldiers raise the flag in front of the Hồ Chí Minh Mausoleum at 06:00 in summer and 06:30 in winter, and lower it at 21:00 every day.³ The changing of the guard at the mausoleum usually follows around 09:00, though it can be moved or cancelled.² Long Biên market opens around 02:00 and is busiest in the small hours; 04:00 to 05:30 is the suggested time to see it.²

Where early cafés are in Hanoi

The six scheduled 06:00 openers are spread across the city. Triều Patisserie at 23 Phố Hàng Nón is the Old Quarter option, open 06:00–19:00, and Capella Coffee Roaster at 74 Tô Ngọc Vân covers Tây Hồ from 06:00 to 18:00. Cà Phê ABC at 96 Võ Thị Sáu in Hai Bà Trưng and Cà Phê B59 at 59 Khương Trung in Thanh Xuân both run 06:00–23:00, as does XuVi home in Cầu Giấy.

The 24-hour cafés fill the gaps. Hoàn Kiếm has Cà Phê Chum at 81 Phố Yên Ninh and JINJU at 27 Phố Nguyễn Hữu Huân, and Ba Đình has Cà Phê Sách at 41 Ngõ 84 Ngọc Khánh.

Summer and winter mornings in Hanoi

In summer, early is the only cool part of the day. June's mean daily high is 34.9°C and July's mean daily low is 26.5°C, so even dawn is warm.⁵ Winter turns that around: January mornings average a low of 14.1°C, and the flag ceremony shifts to 06:30.³⁵ On those mornings, order cà phê nâu nóng (hot milk coffee).
