Outdoor coffee is Hanoi's default: a low plastic stool on the pavement, a glass of trà đá (iced tea) or cà phê, and the street going past. An AFP report in June 2026 described the city's pavements crowded with coffee and beer drinkers on low stools, and quoted an office worker: “Hanoi is only Hanoi if we can have sidewalk iced tea.”2

That pavement culture is now under pressure, which makes cafés with their own terraces, gardens and courtyards more useful, from the lakeside terraces of Hoàn Kiếm to the garden cafés of Tây Hồ.

Local tip: In October and November, take a terrace seat in the late afternoon; in summer go before 08:00 or after dark, and in drizzly spring pick a café with a covered terrace.

Where these cafés are: Hoàn Kiếm (21), Tây Hồ (West Lake) (17), Ba Đình (13), Cầu Giấy (11), Đống Đa (10), Thanh Xuân (6), Hai Bà Trưng (3), Long Biên (2).

Hanoi's sidewalk clearance campaigns

Clearing the pavements is a recurring Hanoi campaign. In March 2017 the city launched a drive against illegally parked cars, shops, extended canopies and other obstructions, starting in districts including Hoàng Mai, Thanh Xuân and Bắc Từ Liêm.4 Earlier campaigns were often short-lived.2

The current one is stricter. Nearly 2,000 surveillance cameras have been installed, police issued more than 3,000 fines from December 2025 to June 2026, and businesses that block foot traffic face fines of up to 6 million ₫.2 The manager of a three-story coffee shop told AFP that about a third of his customers want to sit on the pavement.2

Renting the sidewalk back

Hoàn Kiếm has rented pavement to businesses since 2021, mainly coffee shops, drink vendors and fast-food outlets, at addresses on Lý Thường Kiệt, Lê Phụng Hiểu and Ngô Quyền, on six-month licences.5 It was the only district in the capital doing so as of 2024.5

A citywide draft put out for comment in March 2026 proposes 20,000–45,000₫ per m² per month, on streets at least 3 m wide that keep 1.5 m clear for pedestrians and where at least half the households agree.3 As of May 2026 it was still a draft.3 Meanwhile many cafés have pulled their tables onto their own steps; one shop in Cửa Nam ward reported a 40–50% drop in revenue after losing its outdoor seats.3

The best months to sit outside in Hanoi

Hanoi has four seasons, and outdoor coffee depends on them. Autumn, October and November, is mostly warm and mild, with temperatures and rain both falling.1 Winter, December to February, is cool and dry, and its three months each get about 20 mm of rain.1

Spring, March and April, brings drizzle, little sun and the year's peak humidity, 88% in March. Summer, May to September, is hot and wet: August is the rainiest month at 273.7 mm.1 In summer, a shaded terrace before 08:00 beats any table at noon.

Where outdoor cafés are in Hanoi

Hoàn Kiếm has the most outdoor cafés, followed by Tây Hồ, Ba Đình, Cầu Giấy and Đống Đa. In Tây Hồ several line Tô Ngọc Vân: Joma Bakery Cafe at number 43, LOW BATTERY NEED COFFEE at 49 and Hai Cafe & Coworking Space at 80.

On the lake itself, Conifer Bốn Mùa – Four Seasons at 50 Phố Lê Thái Tổ has outdoor seating and is open 07:00–23:00. In Ba Đình, Cà Phê Hanoi at 1 Phố Văn Miếu has outdoor tables.
