An esplanada is the set of tables a café puts outside, on a pavement, a square or the edge of a garden. In Porto it is a fair-weather habit rather than a year-round one. The city is one of the wettest major cities in Europe, with about 1,237 mm of rain a year at the Fontainhas station, most of it falling in December, November and January.1
Summer is the reward. At Porto Airport the mean daily high is about 24 °C in July and 25 °C in August (1991–2020 normals), and July is the sunniest month, with around 308 hours of sunshine in the older Fontainhas record.1 The beaches are often windier and cooler than the streets inland, which is worth knowing before you choose a seafront table.1
Local tip: Between November and January, Porto's wettest months, pick a café with a room behind the terrace: the Majestic and Confeitaria Império on Rua de Santa Catarina have both.
Where these cafés are: Aliados & Clérigos (24), Bolhão & Santa Catarina (14), Cedofeita & Miguel Bombarda (11), Aldoar & Ramalde (8), Boavista (8), Foz do Douro (5), Ribeira & Sé (5), Marquês & Paranhos (4), Matosinhos (4), Campanhã (3), Bonfim (3), Miragaia & Massarelos (1), Vila Nova de Gaia (1).

Outdoor tables are most common in Aliados & Clérigos, ahead of Bolhão & Santa Catarina and Cedofeita & Miguel Bombarda. Campo dos Mártires da Pátria has a run of them: Jardim 31 at number 31, Dona Porto at 64, Muralhas do Olival at 121 and Café Porta do Olival at 126. On Praça da Liberdade, Confeitaria Ateneia serves outside Monday to Saturday 08:00–20:00.
A short walk west, Café Piolho puts its tables out on Praça de Parada Leitão. Opened on 26 June 1909, it is a well-known meeting place for University of Porto students and has been the scene of many political debates.2 On Praça Guilherme Gomes Fernandes, Leitaria Quinta Paço at 47/51 and Praça 63 at number 63 both have outdoor seating.
Rua de Santa Catarina is a pedestrian shopping street, and its most famous address is the Café Majestic at number 112, opened on 17 December 1921 with Art Nouveau decoration by the architect João Queiroz.3 It has outdoor seating and is open Monday to Saturday 09:00–23:30.
Further along, Confeitaria Império at 149–151 keeps its outdoor tables going until 00:00, Monday to Saturday, and Confeitaria Belo Mundo at 542 opens Monday to Saturday 08:00–20:00. Nearby, Praça da Batalha has two more: Java Café-Restaurante at 97 and Tropical at 132.
Foz do Douro, at the mouth of the river, has the seafront terraces. Tavi, a pastry shop at 363 Rua da Senhora da Luz in Foz Velha, opened in 1935, has belonged to the Paiva family since 2006, and its lounge looks out over the ocean.4 It opens daily 08:30–20:00.
Nearby, Chalé Suiço has tables on Rua do Passeio Alegre, and Concha Douro at 54 Avenida do Doutor Antunes Guimarães is open daily 08:00–20:00. Mademoiselle opens Tuesday to Sunday 08:30–19:00 and closes on Mondays.
Porto widened its terraces during Covid. In the first week of a special regime in May 2020, the city let 123 esplanadas grow from 1,360 to 2,170 square meters of public space, an increase of more than 60%. Tables could go on parking spaces only where no other spot was available, and furniture was limited to tables, chairs and parasols, with no brand advertising.5
Sitting outside doesn't change the order. As of December 2025, a traditional espresso cost €0.70–1.00 in Porto, and one made with specialty beans €1–2.6
