Porto's pastry shops go by several names. A pastelaria is a pastry shop with a coffee counter, a confeitaria a confectioner's that usually works the same way, and a padaria a bakery. Some signs add pão quente (hot bread): Bem Bom on Rua de Fernandes Tomás, Bem-me-Quer on Rua de Sá da Bandeira and Muralhas do Olival on Campo dos Mártires da Pátria all carry it.

The coffee comes with the visit. In Porto an espresso is a cimbalino, a name taken from the Italian Cimbali machines.1 A traditional one cost €0.70–1.00 as of December 2025.2 An espresso with a drop of milk is a pingo, the drink Lisbon calls a garoto.34

Local tip: Order a bola de Berlim at Confeitaria Serrana, then climb to the first floor: the iron staircase leads to sculptures by José de Oliveira Ferreira, the architect's brother.5

Bolas de Berlim, éclairs and arrufadas

The old houses each have a specialty. Confeitaria Serrana at 52 Rua do Loureiro is known for its bolas de Berlim, the Portuguese filled doughnut, praised for their quality and size. Its building was designed by Francisco Oliveira Ferreira, a pupil of Marques da Silva, and its ceiling was painted by Acácio Lino.5

Leitaria da Quinta do Paço began on Praça Guilherme Gomes Fernandes in 1920 and is still there. In 2019 its best seller was the éclair, filled with fresh whipped cream, ahead of the bola de Berlim.6 The shop at 47/51 opens Monday to Thursday 09:00–20:00 and until 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. In 2017, Time Out recommended the arrufadas, sweet buns, at Confeitaria do Bolhão on Rua Formosa, a house then more than a century old.7

The croissant à moda do Porto

Porto has its own croissant. The croissant à moda do Porto is made with brioche dough, which makes it softer than the French kind, and it may be finished with a sugar glaze or flavored with Port wine.8 A contest for the best one is open to shops in the Porto metropolitan area that bake it in-house with butter only. Its second edition, decided in Maia in June 2026, went to Nougat Pâtisserie in Paços de Ferreira.8

Where Porto's pastelarias are

Pastry shops are thickest in Aliados & Clérigos and Marquês & Paranhos, followed by Bolhão & Santa Catarina and then Bonfim. On Rua de Santa Catarina, Confeitaria Império at 149–151 opens Monday to Saturday 07:30–00:00. In Bonfim, Confeitaria Chicana at 36 Avenida de Rodrigues de Freitas opens at 07:00 every day, and Padaria Molete at 207 Rua do Heroísmo opens at 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends.

Near the river, Confeitaria São Domingos is at 37 Largo de São Domingos, and Forno Velho at 21 Calçada do Forno Velho. In Foz, Tavi has two addresses on Rua da Senhora da Luz: the confeitaria at 363, open since 1935, and a padaria at 356.9

Opening hours and what to drink

Pastry shops start early and mostly close by evening. Muralhas do Olival and Confeitaria Pará both open at 06:00, Monday to Saturday, and Confeitaria Labareda at 662 Avenida de Fernão de Magalhães serves 07:00–21:30. Confeitaria Breiner in Cedofeita is the exception, open until 22:30 from Monday to Thursday and until 00:00 on Fridays and Sundays.

With a pastry, order um galão, milky coffee served in a glass, or uma meia de leite, which is equal parts coffee and milk.3 Locals often take their morning coffee with a small pastry or a plain piece of toast.10
